Cameron Andrew Smith, son of Alasdair and Andree Smith and brother of Shannon Smith, tragically lost his life in a car accident on November 12, 2005. Cameron, aged 13, played Bantam hockey with the Kanata Minor Hockey Association and attended W. Erskine Johnston Public School.
Our dual motto of “Community” and “Friendship” reflects Cameron’s love for hockey by showcasing boys and girls hockey talent in a friendly community oriented competition, while engaging the youth of our community in a variety of volunteer roles in support of their Bantam age peers who are less fortunate. As this would have been Cameron’s final year in minor hockey, 2010 will mark the final year of the “Cameron Smith Friendship Tournament”. Up to 32 teams will be accepted to participate in this year’s event. Teams will play a minimum three game schedule, with divisional pool finals. The tournament will end with our traditional co-ed “Cameron Smith Friendship Game”. The tournament is for Bantam B non-checking teams. As we have done over the past two years, we will be incorporating a special events activity into this year’s tournament – to help promote other worthy local programs and initiatives in the area. In addition, we will be running our annual Karaoke night, our annual Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Ottawa Fire Services District 4 Volunteer Firefighters, as well as a number of new initiatives for this year including a chili cook-off. All profits from the Cameron Smith Friendship Tournament go to the Cameron Smith Memorial Fund. In the past three years, the Cameron Smith Memorial Fund has raised nearly $65,000; the goal at the completion of the 2010 Tournament is to have capitalized the fund with $100,000 in donations. Interest earned on capital held in the Fund is being used to provide financial bursaries, to help disadvantaged Bantam age male and female hockey players. By disbursing payment, using only the interest earned by the fund, the objective is to ensure the Fund remains intact, as a lasting tribute and legacy to Cameron and the values of Community and Friendship for which he was known so well. We currently have spots available, although we do sell-out very quickly as Cameron's tournament has become a highly visible and well-recognized tournament in the Ottawa Area - so we encourage interested teams to register early to avoid disappointment! The tournament is SOLD OUT Please visit the 2010 Tournament Information page for additional information and the tournament registration form. |
